Virtual Private Networking (VPN)

MSL DEPARTMENT MEMBERS ONLY.
OTHERS PLEASE CONTACT UBC IT at WWW.IT.UBC.CA.

VPN

What is it?

A software solution that allows remote clients to create virtual private tunnel sessions to our MSL network.

Why do we need it?

Due to recent changes at the UBC Library, you can nolonger use the myVPN (Cisco AnyConnect) to access UBC Library e-resources when off campus.  Therefore, all off campus users are required to use the UBC Library EZProxy service.  Unfortunately, this new EZProxy is cumbersome and interferes with normal workflow.  Consequently, MSL IT has rolled out a new VPN service called OpenVPN.  This allows easier viewing of UBC Library e-resources without the limitation of using EZProxy.

Option1: MyVPN (Cisco AnyConnect) - Faculty, Students, And Staff

  • Requires a Campus Wide Login (CWL)
  • UBC Library e-Resource Access -  EZProxy required
  • Supported Devices - MacOSX, Windows, Android, and iOS
  • Eligibility - All UBC faculty, students, and staff
  • Use Case: Accessing UBC HR, UBC Financial Systems, and VPN Protected Browsing

Using this option, you still need to use the UBC Library's EZProxy.  Please visit the UBC Library website for complete instructions: http://services.library.ubc.ca/off-campus-access/connect-from-home/

For setting up the myVPN (Cisco AnyConnect) client, please visit UBC IT's myVPN: https://it.ubc.ca/services/email-voice-internet/myvpn/setup-documents

Option 2: MSL VPN (Aka OpenVPN)

  • Requires a Campus Wide Login (CWL)
  • UBC Library e-Resource Access - EZProxy not-required
  • Supported Devices - MacOSX and Windows
  • Eligibility - MSL Researchers Only
  • Use Case: Accessing UBC Library Journals and VPN Protected Browsing
