Awards and recognition

Stephen MacDonald recognized with Faculty of Science Excellence in Service Award

We’re excited to extend our congratulations to Stephen MacDonald, our MSL IT Director, for receiving one of this year’s Faculty of Science Excellence in Service Awards. These service awards are presented annually to recognize the outstanding contributions of staff and faculty that have had a positive impact within their departments, and on the Faculty as a whole.

Stephen has been with the MSL since 2002, and in this time has been quick to adapt and innovate as our unit has evolved. Early on in his time at the MSL our researchers were relocated to the Michael Smith Laboratories building, as it first opened in 2004. Since then, our department has grown three times in size as we’ve welcomed new researchers to the MSL community.

“Stephen has been an integral member of the department for many years, and it is wonderful to see his efforts recognized through this award,” shares MSL Operations Manager Karen Reid.

New research technologies have also evolved rapidly during Stephen’s time at the MSL, and he has adapted to these quickly to support their use by our researchers. In particular, he has played a key role in helping our labs navigate the challenges of managing and storing large computational research datasets. This looks unique for each lab, from handling single-cell genomics data to high-resolution microscopy images, and Stephen is always able to adjust his approach to fit the needs of each individual lab.

“He has a remarkable talent for solving complex IT challenges, regardless of the scale,” describes MSL Director Dr. Martin Hirst. “Our faculty readily attest to his sincere commitment to advancing their research.”

Stephen’s impact has expanded beyond the MSL, as he has also initiated partnerships with other UBC departments to collectively access important research software. He is also a valued leader and resource for other units when facing IT challenges, and has recently taken on the role of Interim IT Director at the Faculty of Science to help coordinate IT services between departments.

“Being recognized with this award is both humbling and deeply meaningful,” shares Stephen. “I’ve been fortunate to spend much of my career at the Michael Smith Laboratories, working alongside extraordinarily talented, generous, and committed people in an environment where IT is a true partner in advancing research and teaching. I feel lucky to contribute to this environment alongside people I greatly respect.”

We are grateful to have Stephen as a member of our team, and are delighted to see his hard work and dedication to our unit, and the Faculty more broadly, recognized. Congratulations once more, Stephen, on this well-earned recognition, and thank you for all that you do.
