Title: Reaction network modeling of ecological systems
Abstract: We present a novel approach to represent ecological systems using reaction networks. Ecological species, resources, and specific conditions for ecological interactions to happen are represented by molecular species, while the steps by describe ecological interactions are represented by sequences of reactions. This approach allows to model a “narrative” about how ecological interactions happen, and it is flexible in the sense that can easily be extended to include deeper details about the interaction mechanisms. We show how to depict the most common ecological interactions using reaction networks, how to represent complex ecological systems where different types of interactions are at stake, and discuss the potentials of this model to tackle important challenges in theoretical ecology such as the study of assembly and deconstruction of ecological communities and the complexity-stability debate.
