Title: Tips and tricks for optimizing patent protection of nanomedicine innovation

Abstract: Protecting intellectual property need not be complicated. Wendy will walk you through highlights of the entire process of building a patent portfolio, covering key
discussion points such as:

  • Doing your own literature searches prior to applying for a patent
  • Fundamentals of patent drafting
  • Timing and claim strategy
  • Country selection
  • Best practices for arguing before the Patent Office to secure allowance of broadest claims
  • Strategies for extending patent life (e.g., file continuations and/or divisional patent applications, risk of double patenting)
  • Best practices for invention mining
  • Budgeting and keeping costs in check
  • Determining when to maintain trade secrets rather than pursue patent protection
